Stonetown Acres Welcomes Dwarf Nigerian Goats!

We’re thrilled to share a new chapter in the journey of Stonetown Acres! This winter, we’ll be adding Dwarf Nigerian goats to the homestead. These charming, pint-sized goats are more than just adorable—they’re versatile, hardy, and bring a host of benefits to our growing farmstead.

Why Dwarf Nigerian Goats?

Dwarf Nigerian goats are one of the most beloved breeds in the homesteading and small-farm communities. Despite their small stature (standing about 17-19 inches tall at the withers), they are prized for their exceptional milk production. These little powerhouses produce rich, creamy milk with a high butterfat content, making it perfect for homemade goat milk soaps, cheeses, and other dairy products.

At Stonetown Acres, their compact size is a perfect fit for our regenerative land management practices and our family-oriented approach to farming. They’re gentle, sociable, and full of personality—making them excellent companions for visitors to the farm.

A Little Background

The Dwarf Nigerian goat traces its origins back to West Africa, where they were initially imported to the United States for zoos. Farmers soon recognized their potential as a dual-purpose breed, providing both meat and milk. Over time, selective breeding emphasized their milking ability, sweet temperament, and striking coat colors.

Fun Facts About Their Genetics

One of the most fascinating things about Dwarf Nigerian goats is their incredible variety of coat colors and patterns. From solid black or brown to frosted ears and striking moon spots, these goats are truly a rainbow of possibilities. Their genetics make them unique in every herd, ensuring no two goats look exactly alike.

Additionally, their smaller size is a result of being a naturally miniature breed, rather than a dwarfing mutation. This means they maintain excellent hardiness, ease of kidding, and adaptability to various climates.

What’s Next?

As we prepare to welcome these little wonders to Stonetown Acres, we’re excited to explore how they’ll contribute to our goals of sustainability, education, and community engagement. Over the next few months, we’ll be sharing updates, including the construction of their new barn space, introductions to individual goats, and all the fun antics they bring to the farm.

This is just the start of our Dwarf Nigerian Goat Blog Series, so stay tuned! We’ll cover everything from their care routines to their role in our Chomp and Chill Grazing Co. programs.

We can’t wait to share this journey with you and invite you to visit and meet our newest furry family members. Whether you’re a homesteader, goat enthusiast, or just curious about life on the farm, these posts are for you!
